NASA MISSION PATCHES Exhibit Provided by the American Needlepoint Guild This display features hand-stitched patches created by American Needlepoint Guild members to commemorate NASA's human space flight missions. Guild members devoted in excess of 4,000 combined hours in stitching these space mission patches. The guild is a non-profit organization comprised of 9,000 members in the United States and an additional 1,000 in countries such as England, Canada and Italy. Barbara Edmonds, a past director of educational services for the guild conceived the project. Peg Dunayer is the project canvas artist, hand-painting each canvas from photographs of the mission patches. Barbara Lewis is the guild's coordinator for this project. This is an on-going project - as NASA continues human space flight missions, guild members will stitch the corresponding mission patches. Placing needlepoint in public locations, on the local and national level, is one of the objectives of the guild. Similar projects include ornaments for the White House, a needlepoint map for the United Nations and federal cabinet seals. |
